World celebration comes to Stockwell!

14 August 2017

The rich diversity of residents living in and around Lansdowne Green was celebrated through world music, dance and food on Saturday (12 August).

Around 200 people attended housing association Optivo’s International Day event which celebrates different cultures in style every year.

The free event, held in Lansdowne Green, Stockwell, has now been running for five years and continues to prove popular.

Mayor of Lambeth, Cllr Marcia Cameron, attended to show her support and even joined in with a group Zumba dance.

Colourful costumes were worn and many residents served tasty food, included injera which is a national dish in Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Zeyineb Mohamed, who helped organise the event, said:

We absolutely love International Day. It’s fantastic to celebrate different cultures and it’s like one big family reuniting every year!

Other entertainment on the day included arts and crafts, bouncy castle, henna, face painting, raffles and competitions.

Alma Haq, Resident Involvement Manager at Optivo, said:

It’s amazing to see how this event unites people of all different ages, backgrounds and cultures. It’s one of the highlights of the calendar for us and we’re so glad International Day lived up to residents’ high expectations once again.

We’re already looking forward to the celebration in 2018! I’d like to say thank you to everyone who attended, especially the Mayor of Lambeth who stayed for a considerable amount of time talking to residents and staff
