When Gemma’s eldest child started school full time, her thoughts turned to finding work.

She knew she wanted to help people, but didn’t know how to start looking.

Gemma said: “I have never worked and thought that it would be really difficult to start a career with so little experience. I had only been a mum.”

Our team helped Gemma think about the amazing, transferable skills she had developed by being a mum.

We supported Gemma to undertake an accredited care qualification, which she passed with flying colours!

We then identified local employers and, with a new found confidence, Gemma has a new career in the care sector.

She now has ambitions to become a care manager or have her own care support company.

Tanya Curson, Employability Support Officer, said: “I knew she was very capable and would really be great in any work place. She just needed to believe in herself.”

“It’s a great way to prove your worth.”

David has gone from a volunteering role to a full time job in just four months!

He now has his own van and tools and gets to meet new people every day.

Our Social Impact Team met David in August last year and found him a voluntary position with leading construction company Osborne.

He gained hands on work experience, completed his Level 2 in Plumbing at East Sussex College in Hastings and now works as an operative.

David said: “If you are looking for a foot in the door or to get more experience, I would definitely recommend volunteering. The way I see it is that, you aren’t earning, but you’re earning valuable skills and it’s a great way to prove your worth.”

Rick was in and out of zero hour employment, not knowing how much he’d be paid from one month to the next.

Our Social Impact Team got involved to help Rick. They helped him improve his confidence and overcome barriers to achieving his career aspirations.

They felt volunteering would get Rick vital experience of working as part of a team, problem solving and growing his skill set.

Rick then applied for a volunteering position at Optivo, to work with the Lettings team. After a successful interview Rick was offered the role.

Sharon Roberts, Lettings Manager at Optivo, said: “Rick is getting on very well. He has fitted in and become part of the Lettings team. He is very willing to learn and take on new work the team sets.”
