Be part of our Black History Month celebrations!

11 September 2017

Black History month is coming up in October and is 30 years old this year. Optivo wants to make sure that in marking this anniversary our events will inform, engage and entertain everyone.

As part of BHM@30, we will also be marking related milestones:
• 30th anniversary of the first Black MPs to enter the House of Commons
• 50th anniversary of the Leeds West Indian carnival
• 30th anniversary of the film “Cry Freedom” based on the life of South African activist Steve Biko

Valentine-performs.jpgWe plan to run an oral history project titled “Spring and Autumn”  This will be a series of  1-2-1 discussions between people of different generations, exploring black experiences in the UK, from a personal perspective over the decades. We’re looking for people who would be happy to be part of this project.

This year we also want to focus on events, people and projects relating to black people in the UK not usually seen in mainstream news.

Below are a number of activities, and events we’re considering, we’d like to know your thoughts on these and any other suggestions you may have:

Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Team have been working hard to look into possible events including:

• Film screening
• Interviews with residents “Spring and Autumn”
• A slam poetry competition
• Games and art exhibition night (including a spoken word event)
• Black history quiz
• Resident’s day

We want to know your thoughts on these events and hear any suggestions that you may have.

Please contact Ceila Oke on 0203 202 0247 or email: edi@optivo.org.uk to let us know your thoughts and ideas

We look forward to hearing from you to help us shape this year’s Black History Month.
